I like the way Sumantra and Bruch catergorize the four types of managers.
Category I - Highly focused, highly energerized - this manager concentrates his or her energy on the goal without falling prey to distractions. This category makes up 10% of the study.
Category II - Low focus, low energy - these managers are massive procrastinators - Can you imagine working around a person like this - boring!!!
Category III - High focus, low energy - I once had a CPA that fit in this category. At times I wanted to check his pulse to see if he was still alive! The researchers call it "No passion." I agree!
Category IV - Low focus, high energy - 40% fall into this category - frenzied, jumping from project to project. They quickly accept new projects but because they lack the ability to priortize they abandon them just as quickly.
What do you do if you fall into one of these last three categories or you work for someone that does? In the next few Energy Messages I'm going to take a stab at some suggestions.
Before I sign off let me add that I believe the responsibility of changing to a High Focus, High Energy Manager is always the responsibility of the manager. I've seen some managers so frustrated with their leaders that they throw in the towel and hold on until retirement. In my humble opinion there will always be reasons to slack off, but all of them are unacceptable. Personal responsibility is the key to all success.
Talk to you soon,
Dr. Bob

I would like to comment on #III profile. My car has an alingment problem so I took it to the best place this part of the country, these men are the best on front end work period! When I got there 10 minutes before my apointment an employee walked toward me never smiling, and seem to be waiting on me to explain what I was there for, so I did. I told him I has a 9 o'clock and he shook his head and went back to his doings. I waited over an hour before one of the empoyees pulled a car inside the garage close to where I was standing. He leaned out the window and told me they were short 2 men and one of them probably hasn't got out of bed yet.
My mind started turning like gears put into motions now, and I started watching the employees more closer, as I did another employees pulled up in his motorcyle and zip close to me as he parked it inside the garage.
This is where I begin to really see what was happening. All of the employees looked like robots in motion. All had the same basic bland expression on their faces, all moved at the same slow gait. All where in this world they were apart of and no one else was included.
I found it in myself to try to understand this, so I finally said hi to a employee who has just finished a job, then found he liked softball as so do I. Then I managed to turn the subject on the workplace and he opened up to me. He told me they knew they were the best there were in the business. He told me they didn't have to be socialable or caring because they were the professional in their jobs.
I agreed with most of what he was saying, but this is what I saw as well the short few hours I was their.
I saw waisted time in almost every process. I saw steps that could be taken to make their job easier and more effecient. I saw opertunties to increase profits no less than 50% assuming that they had lost costumers in the past.
Then this thought crossed my mind, I've seen in the media times past how companies wanted their employees to think only on their job the whole time on the clock. Then I looked back in that garage and said that is exactly what these empolyees are doing. No socializing of any kind, everone at their workplace, all business.
I am glad I do not work in an enviroment like that. I am glad I have learn in the past to think and to always look for a better way. I am glad we are not robots, all business in our workplace, we have a life and we socialize and in return we become close knit and our team becomes more productive. We commuticate and find better processes and come up with new improved ideas.
Yes I am glad for a workplace that doesnt make zombies out of us, instead we cause less tension on others who rely on us to do our job.
May the Lord God bless you all in your work.

I would like to comment on the 4th group-low focus high energy. I and my co-workers are subject to this everyday from our (superintendent). This is his personal mission statemate, from his own words I quote: "Change is good". So what do you think happens when I new leader comes inside a department with a personality like that.
The first thing that happened was he moved everything in our department, then he tried to govern every single last detail in our jobs. This means no longer does anyone have a mind of their own, they must seek out "his" wisdom to continue the job. Guess what happened when we did this? We fell further behind and often times he failed to fulfill his end of his self acclaimed duties.
The next thing I noticed was, he completely shut down "all overtime". From a department that is understaff and already short 3 men from when he first came into the department. He commented and I must say foolishly, "they will never work overtime again, I get more out of them in 8 hours than I did in 12". Less then 3 months the company was seeing the effects he had made and fortunanly he backed up and casually okayed overtime as if he never cut it off in the first place.
Again with change, he has changed multiply things over the course of time. Everytime he has done this he has thumped his chest before they have proven worthy. This has caused extra work and a burden at times to fulfill the needs of the company. In the end more times than not he has given up on his new project that he has already taken credit for.
When your company has a self motivated department, it is far better to have any of the other 3 catagories for a leader. I have expericened the 4th for 2 years now, and I personnally am not impressed with the result save this one thing, I can not believe how many times we the employees have been able to miracualously save the company from downtime over and over again, in spite of our lack of support.
My guess is this is why it has been labeled the fourth group, because it is the worst of the worst.
I would like to encourage all managers to look at their staff that oversees the work of others and consider what group they fall into on this list. It could make your company much more profitable to do so and administer a change yourself if need be.
I pray the Lord God will help each of you to make the wise decissions that will cause your company to prosper.
